Sir,
I have the honor to inclose a proclamation which will inform you of the result of the late elections in this state.1 The federal ticket has been carried by a very large majority. Knowing that this circumstance will give you pleasure I have taken the earliest opportunity of communicating it. One circumstance I will add that in the county which bears your name out of 1164 taken there was not one for the antifederal ticket. I am, Sir, Yr most obt sert

John Eager Howard (1752–1827) had a distinguished military career in the southern campaigns during the Revolution and served in the Continental Congress from 1784 to 1788. He was governor of the state from 1788 to 1791.

The enclosure was a broadside issued by Howard on 21 Jan. 1789 proclaiming that Joshua Seney, Daniel Carroll, Benjamin Contee, George Gale, William Smith, and Michael Jenifer Stone were elected to the House of Representatives from Maryland. John Rogers, George Plater, William Tilghman, Alexander Contee Hanson, Philip Thomas, Robert Smith, William Richardson, and William Matthews were the “electors on the part of this state for choosing a president and vice-president of the United States.” A copy of the broadside is in DLC:GW.
