For the forced sale of John Posey’s property on 23, 24, and 25 Oct., see especially GW to Robert Hanson Harrison, 7 Oct., and to Hector Ross, 9 Oct. 1769, and notes. For a summary of how Posey’s indebtedness to GW was paid off by the sale, see the editors’ note for GW’s diary entry of 23 Oct. (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 2:189).

On 16 Oct. GW and John Posey were at Fairfax court where a suit brought by various merchants to whom Posey owed money was to be heard. See Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 2:188, and GW to Robert Hanson Harrison, 7 Oct., n.1.

For a description of this land transaction, see George Mason to GW, 14 Oct. 1769, n.2.

In his account with Alexander, GW gives the amount as £157.15.10 in Maryland currency for “Cash advancd you towards the purchase of Land in Chas County Maryland” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 352). GW gave Alexander two more payments in November, the whole amounting to £500. For GW’s agreement with Alexander and Thomas Hanson Marshall for a three-way land deal, see note 1 in Marshall to GW, 18 June 1769.

In his list of tithables for 1769 (c.20 June), GW reported three slaves named Sarah living at Mount Vernon: on Home farm, Muddy Hole farm, and Mill farm.
