From Thomas Jefferson to George Washington, 21 March 1793

To George Washington

Th: Jefferson with his respects to the President incloses him draughts of letters in the Algerine business. In that to Colo. Humphreys he proposes a modification of the former instructions in one point,1 on a presumption that the President will be disposed to approve it. He will wait on him to-day to know his pleasure, as also to submit to his consideration the question of Mr. Genet’s reception in case of his arrival during the absence of the President.

The President approved the enclosed draughts of letters and returned them to TJ this day (Washington, Journal description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed., The Journal of the Proceedings of the President, 1793–1797, Charlottesville, 1981 description ends , 98).

1To this word Tobias Lear keyed the following penciled notation with a cross: “which is that payment may be made in Naval stores.”
