From John Jay to the Secretary for Foreign Affairs (Robert R. Livingston), 7 December 1782

To the Secretary for Foreign Affairs (Robert R. Livingston)

Paris. 7 Decr. 1782

Dr Sir

On the 18 July last Dr. Franklin paid me nine months Salary due on that Day— I have not taken up any money on the Bills sent by you on that account, because until the 18 Octr. another quarter did not become due. I mentioned this more at large in a former Letter,1 and desired you to pay a Sum of money to Mr Benson for the use of my Family at Poghkeepsie— I fear their Situation is not easy, and therefore I must beg the Favor of you to pay to my Brother Fredk. out of your Rents in our State, the Sum of fifty pounds York money every three months, and reimburse yourself by deducting it from each quarters Salary which you will recieve for me from Mr. Morris— I am uneasy on this Subject, but it gives me Consolation to reflect that your Friendship for me will lead you to undertake this Trouble and that without Delay—the enclosed Letter to my Brother2 mentions this matter—be pleased to forward it—and believe me to be with warm and sincere attachmt Yr. Friend
