sheravaloes: sherryvallies, or overalls, were breeches of thick velvet or leather, buttoned on the outside of each leg and typically worn over knee breeches (; Linda R. Baumgarten, “Jefferson’s Clothing,” Magazine Antiques, 144 [1993], 104).
On 6 July 1803, TJ ordered John Barnes to pay the balance on Carpenter’s account for $332.50 “after taking credit for such part thereof as he has already paid” (MS in ViU; in TJ’s hand and signed by him; at foot of text: “Mr. John Barnes”; with receipt in Barnes’s hand acknowledging whole amount for $332.50, with payment on 12 May for $50 and on 10 June for $150 ⅌ note, for a balance due of $132.50, also noting 60 days at 6 July with receipt of payment on that date; signed by Carpenter; endorsed by Barnes on verso).
