Dear Sir
I enclose you mr Barnes’s note for 500. Dollars to mr Hopkins to be taken up at ten days sight, as also letters of advice to mr Hopkin’s & mr Boyce both of whom will attend to the note. as I have some paiments to make in Richmond which are already some days in arrear, I can only admit the interval of one post before I must send on draughts on you, as follows.

The 3d. in a few days the 2d. not so soon. I am in hopes the punctuality of mr Barnes’s correspondent will save you from any difficulty.

The remittance to John Harvie included TJ’s payment of almost £15 to John Rogers for beef , 2:974, 977). Letters from TJ to Rogers of 14 Jan. 1798 and 7 Jan. 1801, both recorded in SJL, have not been found.
TJ noted that his draft to Peter Derieux was “in charity” ( , 2:977). A letter from TJ to Derieux of 14 Jan. 1798, recorded in SJL, has not been found.
TJ directed Thomas Bell, with part of his draft, to pay notes due 1 Jan. 1798 totaling £49.10 to the Wood family for the hire of three slaves ( , 2:952, 977). Letters from TJ to Bell of 11, 14 Jan., 15 Feb. 1798, 22 Jan., 11 July 1799, and 4 Apr. 1800, recorded in SJL, have not been found. Letters from Bell to TJ of 28 Jan., 11, 25 Feb., and 21 Apr. 1798, recorded in SJL as received 9, 22 Feb., 6 Mch., and 1 May, respectively, are also missing.
