I have the honor to acknolege the receipt of your Excellency’s favor of the 19th. inst. with the exemplification of the treaties accompanying it as also the Bill of the secretary, amounting to 12½ dollars, for which I take the liberty of inclosing him a bank post note thro’ your Excellency, as I know not his particular address. Be pleased to accept my thanks for your attention and assurances of the esteem & respect with which I have the honor to be your Excellency’s Most obedt & most hble servt.

Governor Clinton’s letter of 19 Apr. 1793, recorded in SJL as received 22 Apr. 1793, has not been found. The exemplification of the treaties accompanying Clinton’s letter consists of certified copies of five treaties, concluded between various members of the Iroquois Confederation and the New York Commissioners of Indian Affairs on 28 June 1785, 12 and 22 Sep. 1788, 25 Feb. 1789, and 30 June 1790, conveying certain tribal lands to the state of New York (PrC of Tr in DLC: TJ Papers, 85: 14624–50; dated 11 Apr. 1793; in a clerk’s hand). Attached to it is the following statement by TJ:
“Department of State, to wit.
“I hereby certify that the foregoing sheets, consisting of twenty six pages 4to., and containing Deeds and other acts of certain Nations of Indians conveying Lands to the State of New York, are truly copied from an original exemplification thereof, under the Hand of His Excellency George Clinton Esquire, Governor of the said State, and with the Great Seal of the same appendant, which original exemplification is deposited in the office of the Secretary of State.
“In Testimony whereof I have caused my seal of Office to be here unto affixed. Given under my Hand this twenty six day of April, one thousand seven hundred and ninety three. Th: Jefferson” (PrC in same, 14651; in the hand of George Taylor, Jr., signed by TJ). TJ had requested copies of these treaties for the use of the commissioners appointed to treat with the Western Indians at the forthcoming Lower Sandusky conference (TJ to Clinton, 13 Mch. 1793).
