Thomas Jefferson to Joel Yancey, 9 March 1819

To Joel Yancey

Monticello Mar. 9. 19.

Dear Sir

Your favor of Feb. 19. was recieved the 1st inst. as was also the joint letter from yourself & mr Radford. I now inclose you an order for 55 D. 65. cents the balance which you mention as due for the taxes of the last year. I did not send you an order for the whole taxes at the time because I did not know their amount and expected you would have noted it to me. I shall take care to pay your 2d instalmt with my own to the university. as soon as the tobo is ready be so good as to send it off to mr Gibson, as it is most convenient and advantageous to me to make him the sole depository of all my funds. the tobo may go off therefore as fast as is ready without awaiting further directions from me. only I should be glad of a line notifying me that it is gone. my expectation is that I may be with you the 2d or 3d week of April. I salute you with affection and respect.

Th: Jefferson

PoC (MHi); on verso of reused address cover of William Wallace to TJ, 27 Feb. 1819; at foot of text: “Mr Yancey”; endorsed by TJ. Enclosure not found.

Yancey’s missing favor of feb. 19 (address cover only in DLC; with PoC of TJ to James Madison, 11 Mar. 1819, on verso; addressed: “Mr Thomas Jefferson Monticello” by “Mail”; franked; postmarked Lynchburg, 21 Feb.) is recorded in SJL as received 1 Mar. 1819 from Poplar Forest. The joint letter from Yancey and William Radford has not been found and is not recorded in SJL.

Yancey subsequently conveyed to TJ the receipt that Bedford County deputy sheriff Joseph D. Stratton (writing on behalf of Sheriff Joel Leftwich) had given him when he paid $80 toward the taxes of the last year due on TJ’s Bedford County estate. The voucher at that point indicated that TJ still owed $55.63 out of a total of $135.63 in taxes: $69.89 on 3,790 acres of land (divided into six tracts, as in his 1810 land roll printed in Betts, Farm Book description begins Edwin M. Betts, ed., Thomas Jefferson’s Farm Book, 1953 (in two separately paginated sections; unless otherwise specified, references are to the second section) description ends , pt. 1, p. 127, with the largest parcel reduced in size from 2,588½ to 2,184 acres), $25.76 for the county and parish levy, $37.10 on his fifty-three slaves over the age of twelve, and $2.88 for the sixteen horses he kept there. The document was later revised to indicate that Yancey had paid the balance due (MS in ViU: TJP; in Stratton’s hand, with one acreage amount subsequently corrected by TJ from 580 to 380 acres; undated; endorsed by TJ: “Sheriff of Bedford. taxes of 1818”).
