Bennington [Vermont] October 18, 1794. “Noah Smith Esquire has signified to me, that he has resigned the Office of Supervisor of this District.2 Cephus Smith, Junr. Esquire of Rutland, wishes to obtain the appointment to that Office. He is a Gentleman of Education Integrity and ability. I can therefore recommend him as a person well qualified to discharge all the duties of a Supervisor. He is a reputable practitioner of Law, and is Thirty Three Years of Age.”3

1. Marsh was United States attorney for the District of Vermont.

2. Noah Smith had been appointed supervisor of the revenue for the District of Vermont on March 4, 1791 (Executive Journal, I description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate (Washington, 1828),I. description ends , 81, 82).

3. On November 24, 1794, the Senate approved the nomination of Nathaniel Brush as supervisor of the revenue for the District of Vermont (Executive Journal, I description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate (Washington, 1828),I. description ends , 163, 164).
