1. The enclosed extract from Arthur St. Clair to Henry Knox, dated Danville, Ky., 23 Aug., noted that Brig. Gen. James Wilkinson had just informed Brig. Gen. Charles Scott that “He has been compleatly successful at L’Anguille suprized it, and has killed and taken forty two. Particulars are not mentioned, saving only that circumstances, prevented his prosecuting the enterprize against the Kickapoo Town in the Prairie, but that he had destroyed one of their villages of 30 houses, and had but two men Killed, and one wounded. I left Fort Washington on the 18th, and shall set out on my return tomorrow” (DLC:GW). Knox informed St. Clair on 22 Sept. that he had received his letter from Danville, dated 24 Aug. 2. In his letter of 23 Aug., St. Clair informed Knox that “I gave you a particular account from Lexington” of his consultation with John Brown and Harry Innes. That letter, dated 4 Aug., arrived at the War Department on 30 Sept. (see Knox to GW, 1 Oct. 1791). Knox wrote to St. Clair on 29 Sept., acknowledging receipt of duplicates of St. Clair’s letters of 6 July and 3, 8 Aug., and originals of 17 and 29 Aug.
