Dear Sir
Inclosed is the last information from the War & Navy Depts.1 Be so good as to return the letters. I have signed the Exequaturs for the Swedish Vice Consuls. But considering the source from which those appointments proceed, & the known abuses of the Sweedish flag, it seems proper that other evidence of character should be had, than the selection of Soderstrom. You may delay or issue the Exequaturs as you think fit.
The newspapers contain every thing I have learnt from the late arrival from Nantz.2 I inclose several as they may possibly be a day later than those you receive thro’ the office at Washington. Affectionate respects

1. JM probably forwarded John Armstrong’s letter of 1 Sept. and William Jones’s letters of 7, 8, and 10 Sept. 1813.
2. The Daily National Intelligencer of 9 Sept. 1813 announced the arrival of the privateer schooner Sabine at Gloucester, Massachusetts, after a passage of thirty-six days from Nantes. The ship brought news of the extension of the European armistice to mid-August, William Harris Crawford’s arrival in France, and British attacks on seaports in northern Spain and pursuit of U.S. Navy Capt. John Rodgers in the North Sea.
