Consul Maury enclosed a copy of George Joy to JM, 8 July 1809, which included a translation of a Dutch resolution of 30 June listing articles that could be imported into Holland “by our decree of 31 March,” augmented with the addition of rice, barrel staves, cotton, “Java Coffee & Java sugars,” and a second resolution of 30 June allowing American ships for three months after that date to be excused from the French blockade except those which “have been in England or who might have been visited by the Enemy.” Joy sent the message in duplicate, explaining that it was “a bad translation, but genuine [and] just come to hand in a Letter 5 July from Rotterdam.” Maury sent the second copy with a brief covering letter to JM dated 13 July (ibid.).
