The death of Genl Smith having caused a vacancy in the Office of Marshall of the Southern District of New York We do respectfully recommend Roger Strong Esqr. for that Office.

1. William Paulding Jr. (1770–1854), brother of James K. Paulding, served as a Republican representative in the Twelfth Congress, 1811–13; he became mayor of New York City in 1823 (Aderman, Letters of James Kirke Paulding, 59 and n.). Ogden Edwards was legal counsel for the Common Council of the City of New York. The other signatories were minor office holders, merchants, and lawyers with business before the Common Council (Peterson, Minutes of the Common Council of the City of New York, 4:553 and 8:314, 531).
