§ From Benjamin Hardin. 8 December 1815, “Representatives Chamber.” “Your invitation has been received and if nothing intervenes more than I expect I will do my self the honour to attend.”

RC (PHi: Gratz Collection). 1 p. Year not indicated; conjectural year supplied based on internal evidence and Hardin’s service in Congress for one term during JM’s presidency, 1815–16. Benjamin Hardin (1784–1852), a native of Pennsylvania, earned renown as a criminal lawyer in Kentucky. He served eight years in the Kentucky legislature, ten years in the U.S. House of Representatives, and three years (1844–47) as Kentucky’s secretary of state (Ireland, Robert M. “Hardin, Benjamin, Jr.,” in Kentucky Encyclopedia, 1992).
