1This was probably James Ross, A Short, Plain, Comprehensive, Practical Latin Grammar, Comprising all of the Rules and Observations Necessary to an Accurate Knowledge of the Latin Classics, which was published in several editions in Philadelphia in the early nineteenth century.

3Augustin-Louis Josse’s Grammar of the Spanish Language, with Practical Exercises first appeared in French in 1799. It was translated into English and reprinted many times in the United States before the Civil War.
