§ From William C. C. Claiborne. 3 August 1805, New Orleans. “Having understood that Mr Moralis had been instructed by the King of Spain to despose of all, the vacant Lands in East and West Florida, and to open his office in this City, I immediatly addressed to the Marquis of Casa Calvo a Letter of which the enclosed is a Copy.”1

1The enclosure (1 p.; docketed by Wagner; printed in Rowland, Claiborne Letter Books, description begins Dunbar Rowland, ed., Official Letter Books of W. C. C. Claiborne, 1801–1816 (6 vols.; Jackson, Miss., 1917). description ends 3:146) is a copy of Claiborne to Casa Calvo, 3 Aug. 1805, stating that he understood that Juan Ventura Morales had received orders from the king “to dispose of all the vacant Lands in West and East Florida” and that Morales was opening an office for that purpose in New Orleans. He asked Casa Calvo if the information was correct and if Morales would “undertake to exercise his functions during his Continuance within this Territory.”
