To James Madison from George Nicholas, 7 July 1785

From George Nicholas

July 7th. 1785.

Dear Sir,

I expected to have done myself the pleasure of calling on you from the last Orange court but was disappointed in going there. I received the remonstrance1 and had it copied for I found that any change in it must be for the worse. One hundred and fifty of our most respectable freeholders signed it in a day. I have sent copies to the counties that I mentioned in my last.2 I am with regard and esteem Dr. Sir Yr. Obdt.

G. Nicholas

RC (DLC). Cover missing. Docketed by JM.

1In 1785, the Orange County Court met on 23 June. Thus JM’s “Memorial and Remonstrance” on the General Assessment bill apparently was ready for transmittal to Nicholas then, which fixes its final preparation at sometime between 20 and 23 June.

2Nicholas had last written JM on 22 Apr. 1785. “Memorial and Remonstrance” petitions from only six of the counties mentioned by Nicholas reached the General Assembly during the Oct. 1785 session: Albemarle, Amherst, Culpeper, Frederick, Loudoun, and Rockingham (Vi: Mss, except Rockingham, which is noted in JHDV description begins Journal of the House of Delegates of the Commonwealth of Virginia; Begun and Held at the Capitol, in the City of Williamsburg. Beginning in 1780, the portion after the semicolon reads, Begun and Held in the Town of Richmond. In the County of Henrico. The journal for each session has its own title page and is individually paginated. The edition used is the one in which the journals for 1777–1786 are brought together in two volumes, with each journal published in Richmond in either 1827 or 1828 and often called the “Thomas W. White reprint.” description ends , Oct. 1785, p. 6).
