1In 1769 David Rankin began renting from GW for £4 a year “113 Acres of Land on the head of Worthington’s Marsh in Fredk County” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 306). GW received on 20 Sept. 1773 the last payment of Rankin’s rent for the year 1772 from “my Brothr Saml Washington” (General Ledger B description begins General Ledger B, 1772–1793. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 32).

2William Herbert (1743–1818), who had arrived from Ireland a few years before, was married to John Carlyle’s daughter Sarah and was a merchant in Alexandria.

3GW wrote in his Cash Memoranda, 1772-75 description begins “Pocket-day-Book or Cash-Memorandums,” 9 Aug. 1772–27 May 1773, 29 May 1773–22 March 1774, 26 Oct. 1774–3 May 1775. Manuscript in George Washington Papers, Library of Congress. 24 March-31 October 1774. Manuscript in Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, San Marino, Calif. description ends on 2 Sept.: “By Cash sent to the Annapolis Printers for Publishg my Advertisements” (DLC:GW). One of the advertisements was for the Clifton’s Neck land, under the date of 4 Aug., and the other was the Advertisement of Western Lands, under the date of 15 July. Both advertisements appeared in the Maryland Gazette (Annapolis) for 9 Sept.; they appeared in the Virginia Gazette (Purdie and Dixon; Williamsburg) for the first time on 29 July.
