§ To Albert Gallatin. 13 February 1806, Department of State. “I request you to be pleased to issue a warrant for three thousand nine hundred & forty seven dollars & thirty six cents on the appropriations for Barbary intercours⟨e,⟩ in favor of James Davidson Jnr. the holder of the enclosed bill of Exchange, drawn upon me for the same, in favor of Dagen, Purviance & Co. by Tobias Lear Esqr. Consul General at Algiers, who is to be charged for the same & held accountable.”1

1On 19 Feb. 1806 JM sent Gallatin another request on the Barbary appropriations “for twenty one thousand seven hundred & ten dollars & fifty three cents in favor of Thomas Dunn, the holder of the enclosed bills of exchange, the one for Sixteen thousand, seven hundred & seventy six dollars and thirty one cents; and the other for four thousand, nine hundred & thirty four dollars and twenty two cents; both dated the fourth of November last, in favor of Degen, Purviance & Co., and drawn upon me by Tobias Lear Esqr. Consul General at Algiers, who is to be charged for the same and held accountable” (DNA: RG 59, DL, vol. 15; 1 p.). On 26 Mar. 1806 he asked Gallatin “to be pleased to remit to Sir Francis Baring & Co. the Bankers of the Department of State in London, on account of Seamen, one thousand pounds Stg.—four thousand three hundred & seventy pounds, four Shillings and five pence, do. on account of the Barbary Intercourse—One thousand nine hundred & ninety pounds Sixteen Shillings and six pence do. on account of the diplomatic fund; and four thousand pounds do. on account of prize causes” (ibid.; 1 p.). On 29 Mar. 1806 he requested “a warrant for twelve hundred dollars to be issued, to be paid out of the appropriations for Barbary purposes, in favor of James Davidson Jnr. the holder of a Bill of Exchange drawn upon me by James Simpson, Consul of the U. States at Tangier, on the 30th. Novr. last—the said Simpson to be charged therewith on the Books of the Treasury” (ibid.; 1 p.). On 10 May 1806 JM requested a warrant of the Barbary appropriations for “Six Hundred Dollars, in favor of James Davidson Jnr. the holder of the enclosed bill of exchange, dated on the 22d. January last in favor of Stephen Tillinghast, and drawn by James Simpson” (ibid.; 1 p.), and on 19 May 1806 he requested “a warrant for five thousand dollars, upon the appropriation for Barbary Intercourse, in favor of James Leander Cathcart, who is to be charged with it & held accountable” (ibid.; 1 p.).
