From James Madison to Albert Gallatin (Abstract), 23 May 1805

§ To Albert Gallatin

23 May 1805, Department of State. “I have the honor to request, that you will be pleased to cause Seven thousand dollars, from the appropriations for foreign intercourse, to be remitted to Sir Francis Baring & Co. the Bankers of this Department in London.”1

1On 30 May 1805 JM asked Gallatin for similar warrants for $3,000 to be remitted to Baring Brothers & Co. and for $20,000 to be sent to Willink & Van Staphorst at Amsterdam (DNA: RG 59, DL, vol. 14; 1 p. each).
