1. JM made several other requests to Gallatin for warrants to be issued on the appropriations for Barbary intercourse. On 30 Apr. 1805 he requested a warrant for $1,000 “in favor of Richard OBrien, to satisfy the enclosed Bill of Exchange drawn by Tobias Lear upon me for the same sum, on the 24th. March 1804: Mr. Lear to be charged with the same on account of salary, as Consul of the U:S: at Algiers” (DNA: RG 59, DL, vol. 14; 1 p.). On 24 May 1805 JM requested a warrant “in favor of Henry Foxall for two thousand dollars” (ibid.; 1 p.) and on 29 May 1805 “for three thousand three hundred & forty two dollars & twenty nine cents, in favor of Louis Deblois the holder of the enclosed bill of exchange drawn upon me on the 10th. of January last for the same sum in favor of Wm. Bartlet by Messrs. Degen, Purviance & Co. of Leghorn” (ibid.; 1 p.). On 17 June 1805 JM asked that $3,705.04 be remitted to Ebenezer Stevens at New York (DNA: RG 59, DL, vol. 15; 1 p.), and on 24 June 1805 he requested a warrant for $1,562.80 in favor of James L. Cathcart as an advance “on account of the loss he sustained by leaving his bulky furnature at Tripoli on the rupture taking place, and by a forced purchase of cloth made from him by the Bashaw,” which was not to be charged against Cathcart’s account currently being settled at the Treasury but should “continue for a future account” (ibid.; 1 p.). On 27 June 1805 JM requested a warrant for $23,000 in favor of James Davidson Jr. who had presented twenty-four bills of exchange, all drawn upon JM on 25 May 1804 by Degen, Purviance & Co., U.S. Navy agents at Leghorn, for advances made to Tobias Lear in favor of James McKenzie and Alexander Glennie, the account to be charged to Degen, Purviance & Co.
