Notes on War Department Correspondence

[ca. 16 August 1814]

May 7. Izard asks bounds of commd.1

Wanted Letters from Genl. Jackson between May 8. & July 14.

Letter of Govr. Wright to Secy. of War of July 14. submitted by the Secy. to J.M. Aug. 16.2

Ms (DLC: Rives Collection, Madison Papers). Written on the folded left-hand side of James Monroe to JM, ca. 25 June 1814 (PJM-PS, description begins Robert A. Rutland et al., eds., The Papers of James Madison: Presidential Series (8 vols. to date; Charlottesville, Va., 1984–). description ends 7:585), and the folded verso of JM’s Notes on War Department Correspondence, 23 July 1814. Listed under Monroe at 23 July 1814 in the Index to the James Madison Papers; conjectural date supplied here based on internal evidence.

1On 20 May 1814 John Armstrong had forwarded to JM, Maj. Gen. George Izard’s letter of 7 May 1814 (PJM-PS, description begins Robert A. Rutland et al., eds., The Papers of James Madison: Presidential Series (8 vols. to date; Charlottesville, Va., 1984–). description ends 7:505–6 and n. 2). Izard’s request to be informed of the extent of his command may have been overlooked, as it was omitted from the War Department’s summary of the letter (DNA: RG 107, LRRS, I-466:7).

2Robert Wright to John Armstrong, 14 July 1814 (printed above).
