The letter is dated “31st Septr 1799,” but the contents of the letter make it clear that it was not written in late September but rather, probably, in August, and the “31st” suggests that GW inadvertently wrote September instead of August. After his return from England in late 1798 or early 1799, Thomas Attwood Digges (1742–1821) of Warburton in Maryland had visited Mount Vernon several times, most recently on 15 Aug. Mrs. Digges is probably Thomas Digges’s sister-in-law Catherine Brent Digges, widow of George Digges.
