As the files of the Senate seem to be the proper depository for the inclosed papers, I take the liberty of handing them on to you and of assuring you of my high consideration and respect.

Enclosure: John Caldwell, clerk of the Delaware House of Representatives, to the President of the Senate of the United States, Dover, 17 Jan. 1803, transmitting credentials certifying the election of Samuel White to the United States Senate; the letter had been inadvertently delivered to TJ (RC in DNA: RG 46, LP, Reports and Communications Submitted to the Senate, 7th Cong., 2d sess.; addressed: “The Honourable The President of the Senate of the United States”; franked and postmarked; endorsed by TJ as received 22 Jan. and so recorded in SJL; endorsed by a Senate clerk).
On 24 Jan., Vice President Aaron Burr presented John Caldwell’s letter and Samuel White’s credentials to the Senate, which ordered that they lie on file (, 3:255).
