1. Eli Leavenworth’s letter to Scott of this date from Greenwich, Conn., reads: “Am Just return’d from new-Rochel, am well inform’d by Esqr: Gion, and others of Verasity, that tusday of last week [13 Oct.] a Division of the British Army put to sea, that they are Imbarking a 2d Division—The new Levy troops he says march’d from Kingbridge to new York with their Packs &c. the 15th Inst:, beleives they left a Saml [small?] guard, at Kingbridge, he says the Reports are they are going to the west Indies, he says he really beleives the whole army are going, the Scorpine that lies at new City Iland, is going with the fleet and have Offered Isaac B[el]l the Pilot half pay (if he’l go to England) during life, he says hes well informd the Troop are all going, but refused to tell how he got his Inteligence, but that I might Depend they were then im<barking> and the Green Coats were to sail <with> the first Division—I had the same Accounts from Sundry People who were as Confident—the person your Honour ingaged to go in to New York is not gone in yet the principle person who was to attend upon him, Chose rather to go once more while the Briches maker was geting ready. was Stopt three times but the fourth attempt he got in, and has been their ten Days, had not returnd last night. am going again this night, hope he will be back—I am so weary am not able to write—shall set Mr Green on Long Island this evining” (DLC:GW).
