1. Hazlehurst was a Philadelphia merchant.
2. H had asked Hazlehurst to arrange for a ship to carry dispatches to Gouverneur Morris (H to Hazelhurst, December 26, 1793). On August 15, 1793, the cabinet “agreed that the Secretary of the treasury should take measures for obtaining a vessel either by hire or purchase, to be sent to France express, with the dispatches when ready” (“Cabinet Meetings. Proposals Concerning the Conduct of the French Minister,” August 1–23, 1793). In RG 217, Miscellaneous Treasury Accounts, Account No. 5623, National Archives, there is a statement of expenses for Hazelhurst concerning the “sloop Hannah William Culver master, together with charges attendent on her voyage to and from Havre De Grace, purchased and fitted out by order of and on account of Government to carry dispatches from the President to the Minister of the United States in France.”
3. This letter is endorsed as follows: “Augt. 23d. 1793 Alexr. Hamilton recd. & ansd. the same day.” Hazlehurst’s reply to H has not been found.
