Thomas Jefferson Papers

To Thomas Jefferson from Charles Burrall, 20 May 1803

From Charles Burrall

Baltimore May 20, 1803

Sir,

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Note of the 10th Inst, covering two letters, one for Mr Skipwith, & the other for Mr Barnet both of which I forwarded by the Brig Henry, Capt Sherman that sailed on the 12th Inst for Bourdeaux. There being no prospect of a conveyance direct for Havre, I thought it advisable to send both letters by Capt Sherman.—

I am Sir with great respect your obedient servant

Chas: Burrall

RC (MHi); at foot of text: “The President of the United States”; endorsed by TJ as received 21 May and so recorded in SJL with notation “lre to Skipw. went May 12. to Bord.”; also endorsed by TJ: “that my lres to Skipwith & Barnet went by a vessel which sailed May 12. for Bordeaux. may be in Paris in 6. weeks, viz June 22.”

TJ did not record his note of 10 May to the Baltimore postmaster in SJL and it has not been found (Vol. 33:427n). The letters forwarded were TJ to Fulwar Skipwith, 4 May, and TJ to Isaac Cox Barnet, 10 May.
