1The North Carolina senators forwarded a confidential letter they had received from Robert Williams, dated 2 Nov. 1811 (3 pp.), seeking a judicial position in the Orleans Territory that Williams assumed was vacant by virtue of the reported death of the incumbent, George Mathews, Jr. Williams requested the senators to bring his candidacy to JM’s attention, but his letter was similar to one that he had sent to JM on 2 Nov. 1811 (see PJM-PS description begins Robert A.
