1Adam Cooke (ca. 1771–1839) was born in Ireland and came to the United States about 1792. He was surveyor and inspector of the revenue at Fredericksburg, from 1816 until his death (Harry Warren, “Col. William G. Cooke,” Quarterly of the Texas State Historical Association 9 [1906]: 210–11; Daily National Intelligencer, 14 Nov. 1816; Baltimore Sun, 13 May 1839 and 1 Feb. 1840).

2James Cooke (ca. 1795–1873), the son of Adam Cooke, was educated as a physician at the University of Pennsylvania and practiced medicine in Fredericksburg. He was the author of A Sketch of the Autumnal Fever, as It Prevailed in the Town of Fredericksburg, Virginia, 1821 (Philadelphia, 1822). For a time he ran a grocery business in Fredericksburg with his father (Warren, “Col. William G. Cooke,” Quarterly of the Texas State Historical Association 9 [1906]: 211; Fredericksburg Virginia Herald, 2 Jan. 1822).
