1. The enclosed letter from Cornplanter has not been identified. It might have been a reply to the letter Henry Knox sent Cornplanter on 7 Jan. 1792 by Lt. John Jeffers promising federal protection of his people from the incursions of the hostile Miami and Wabash Indians of the Northwest (ASP, Indian Affairs, description begins Walter Lowrie et al., eds. American State Papers. Documents, Legislative and Executive, of the Congress of the United States. 38 vols. Washington, D.C., Gales and Seaton, 1832–61. description ends 1:226). On 10 Feb. 1792 the secretary of war sent under cover of a letter to Capt. Waterman Baldwin the president’s invitation to Cornplanter and several other Seneca chiefs immediately to “repair to Philadelphia, in order to decide on the measures, which shall best promote the common good of the Senecas and the white people” (ibid., 227–28). Cornplanter had met GW during a visit to Philadelphia in December 1790–February 1791 when Seneca chiefs presented grievances to the federal government (see Seneca Chiefs to GW, 1 Dec. 1790, 10 Jan., 7 Feb., 17 Mar. 1791, Henry Knox to GW, 27 Dec. 1790, and GW to Seneca Chiefs, 29 Dec. 1790, 19 Jan. 1791).
