1. Knox’s clerk dated this letter “6 April” on the LS. Lear correctly docketed it as having been written on “6 Feby 1793” and inserted “Feby” above “April” in the dateline.

2. Gov. William Moultrie of South Carolina, in his letter to Knox of 14 Jan., sought weapons and “accutrements for 200 horsemen” as a precaution against hostile Indians (JPP, description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed. The Journal of the Proceedings of the President, 1793–1797. Charlottesville, Va., 1981. description ends 43). This appeal from Moultrie followed that of Charles Pinckney, who as governor in late 1792 had found success in his request to purchase arms from the federal arsenal (Pinckney to GW, 30 Sept., Knox to Lear, 27 Oct. 1792, n.3). On 15 Feb., Moultrie wrote GW to ask for further assistance.

3. Southwest Territory governor William Blount enclosed in his letter to Knox of 10 Jan. notes from his conversations with various Cherokee chiefs, and he explained his reasons for moving a planned meeting with them from February to April (JPP, description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed.
