Sir,
As Treasurer of the Agricultural Society of Albemarle, it has become my duty to forward to each member a statement of his account with the Society. You perceive by the one above that you are indebted to the Society fifteen dollars, which if remitted by mail to Hart’s Store, Albemarle, will be very certain to come safely to hand, or if it miscarries will be at the risk of the Society.

RC (DLC: TJ Papers, 216:38635); undated; printed form, with blanks filled in by Coles rendered above in boldface; endorsed by TJ as an undated letter from Coles received 7 Dec. 1819 and so recorded in SJL.
The printed statement of TJ’s account (with letter above subjoined; handwritten dates, numbers, and heading of “Thomas Jefferson Esqr” in Coles’s hand) indicates that TJ owed the society $5 for his admission in October 1817 and $5 each year in annual dues for 1818 and 1819.
