1. On 1 Dec. 1805 JM and Dolley Madison had enrolled Dolley’s son, John Payne Todd, then thirteen years old, at St. Mary’s College in Baltimore. Founded in 1791 as a seminary, that institution became a college in 1799 and a university in 1805 (JM to Dolley Madison, Nov. 1805 [MHi]; Scharf, History of Baltimore, 1:234). Subsequent accounts from the college will be summarized.
