§ From John Armstrong

11 February 1813, War Department. Presents “a general return of the militia of the United States, taken from the latest returns, which have been received by this Dept. from the several states & Territories.”1

1Armstrong enclosed a two-page return of the militia for the states and territories, totaling 719,449 troops (DNA: RG 233, President’s Messages, 12A-D1; printed as Message from the President of the United States, Transmitting a Statement of the Militia of the United States According to the Latest Returns Received by the War Department [Washington, 1813]; Shaw and Shoemaker 30258, 30259). The return also enumerated the ordnance, arms, and ammunition of the states and territories. JM forwarded it to the Senate and House of Representatives on 13 Feb. 1813 (DNA: RG 46, Legislative Proceedings, President’s Messages, 12A-E2; DNA: RG 233, President’s Messages, 12A-D1).
