Burgess Griffin

RC (ViU: TJP); endorsed by TJ as received 10 Jan. 1810 and so recorded in SJL.

Burgess Griffin served as TJ’s overseer at Poplar Forest, 1801–11. Upon settling their accounts, TJ found that he owed Griffin a bit over $1,200, a debt he paid in 1815 (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1080, 1267, 1282, 1309; Wilson Cary Nicholas to TJ, 12 Aug. 1801 [DLC]).

John Richardson (richerson) was a plasterer working at Poplar Forest. Samuel Scott, that superior man of obstanancy, disputed TJ’s ownership of approximately fifty-five acres of the Stith tract on Ivy Creek in Campbell County. After having been ejected from the property by a writ of forcible entry, he brought a chancery suit against both TJ and Samuel J. harrison, who had purchased the property from TJ in 1810. The case was dismissed in June 1814 (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1254–6; TJ to Christopher Clark, 1 Apr. 1810; TJ’s answer to Scott’s bill of complaint, 11 July 1812; George Hay to TJ, 8 Mar. 1815).

Letters from TJ to Griffin of 15 Dec. 1809, 2 Jan., 24 Feb., 6 May, and 2 June 1810, not found, are recorded in SJL, as are missing letters from Griffin of 8 Feb., 25 Mar., and 13 June 1810 received from Poplar Forest on 22 Feb., 15 Apr., and 20 June 1810.
