Your favor of 9th Inst is at Hand covering five dollars for your subscription to the Weekly Register for the current year—inclosed you have a rect for the same. and please receive thanks for your polite attention and punctuality.

RC (DLC); at foot of text: “Thos Jefferson Esqr Monticello”; endorsed by TJ as a letter from “Henry” Niles received 20 Dec. 1818 and so recorded in SJL; with additional notation by TJ above endorsement: “Newspapers.” Enclosure: receipt from Butler (for Niles) to TJ, Baltimore, 16 Dec. 1818, for five dollars, covering subscription to Baltimore Weekly Register “from No. 364 to No. 416 or for 1 year up to September, 1819” (MS in DLC; printed form, with blanks filled in by Butler [here indicated by underscoring] and signed by him).
