Richd Washington

LB, DLC:GW. The letter-book copy is in GW’s hand.

GW sent his first order to the London merchant Richard Washington on 6 Dec. 1755.

1GW wrote for the articles in the first four parcels listed here on 15 April 1757. See both his letter and his invoice to Richard Washington of that date. On 10 Sept. 1757 GW wrote Richard Washington that he was sending him another copy of his order of 15 April because he had learned that the vessel by which he had sent the original order “has mistaken her Rout and got to France.” The sword and belts contained in the last listed case were ordered earlier, in 1756, for GW by John Carlyle (see note 6).

2This was English-made wallpaper in the Chinese style.

3This was wallpaper with India floral designs.

4The slab was a mantel for a fireplace, the plinths were the stone pieces used for the base of the mantel, and the covings were the sides of the fireplace itself.

5This was window glass made by spreading a blown bubble on a flat surface.
