Thomas Jefferson to Peter Bolinger, 9 April 1819

To Peter Bolinger

Monticello Apr. 9. 19.

Sir

We accept your offer to convey water in pipes to the University on the terms stated in mr Cosby’s letter to me of Mar. 14.—it would be best you should come on ready to begin the work in the first week of May because I shall be absent till then on a journey. I salute you with respect.

Peter Bolinger (1771–1835), of Rockingham County, was a low-ranking officer in the Virginia militia for several years after 1809. He apparently never worked for the University of Virginia during TJ’s lifetime (DNA: RG 29, CS, Rockingham Co., 1810–30; Rockingham Co. Minute Book, 6:496, 7:199, 17:2, 3; gravestone inscription in Peaked Mountain Cemetery, McGaheysville).
