Agreement by Elijah Huffman and Aaron Fray to Lay Pipe at the University of Virginia

April 15th 1820—

Elija Huffman & Aaron Fray agrees to bore the pipes & put them down for six & a quarter cents per foot runing measure, the logs to be delivered in the most convenient place to suit ourselves, the diging & filling up and the boxes to be furnish’d by the institution—the worked to be executed in a masterly manner—Elija Hoffman & Aaron Fray to find themselves with all necessaries—

Elijah Huffman (d. ca. 1839), bored and laid pipe at the University of Virginia between May 1820 and October 1822. He was in Madison County in 1810, when he owned one slave. In 1820 and 1830 Huffman resided in Orange County, and he subsequently lived in Albemarle County (ViU: PP, Proctor’s Ledgers; DNA: RG 29, CS, Madison Co., 1810, Orange Co., 1820, 1830; Vi: RG 48, Personal Property Tax Returns, Albemarle Co., 1839).

Aaron Fray (ca. 1776–1854) was baptized in 1776 in a part of Culpeper County that became Madison County in 1793, lived there until at least 1810, and was residing in Orange County a decade later. By 1830 he was a farmer in Howard County, Missouri. Fray owned real estate there valued at $1,200 and four slaves in 1850 (Florence Virginia Fray Lewis, comp., A History & Genealogy of John Fray (Johannes Frey) of Culpeper County, Virginia [1958], 104–5; DNA: RG 29, CS, Madison Co., 1810, Orange Co., 1820, Mo., Howard Co., 1830–50, 1850 slave schedules; Walter B. Stevens, Missouri, The Center State: 1821–1915 [1915], 3:377; Glasgow [Mo.] Weekly Times, 21 Dec. 1854; gravestone inscription in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Armstrong, Mo.).
