john nelson was John Neilson. A stick is a measure of cloth or thread by length equal to about three-quarters of a yard. TJ recorded on 15 Apr. 1820 that his $33 payment to Josiah Leake, agent of John H. rice, covered his subscription for six copies of “Smith’s hist. of Virga.” Rice had been involved in the publication of a two-volume edition of earlier works by John Smith, the second volume of which was The Generall Historie of Virginia, New-England, and the Summer Iles (Richmond, 1819; Sowerby, description begins E.
