D, ViLxW: Washington’s Account Book; D, ViHi: Custis Papers, in John Mercer’s hand. The item numbers, which GW took from the Combined County Inventory (doc. III-A–1), do not appear in the Mercer copy. Mercer consolidated his listing so that there are fewer individual entries than in GW’s, and he broke up his list by counties. He gives the value of goods used from New Kent County as £580.1.7; from James City County, £79.4.7; from King William, £5; and from York, £20. At the end of another listing (doc. III-A–8), Mercer inserted a list of “Goods out of the Inventory [i.e., list of items used by Mrs. Custis] omitted,” reporting their appraised value at £35.12.6 for a total appraised value of £719.18.8. This is £5.12.2 more than GW’s subtotal of £714.6.6. The material in square brackets, unless otherwise noted, is taken from the Combined County Inventory (doc. III-A–1), from which this listing was made. GW’s subtotals, eleven of which are entered at irregular intervals within the account, and running totals at the bottom of each of the four columns in the account, neither of which are included here, confirm the accuracy of the insertions.

Item no. 196 in doc. III-A–1 is “A Cistern to Cool Meat and 1 Jarr.” Item 130 lists “3 buttr Pots.”

Item no. 205 in doc. III-A–1 records the appraised value at £1.19.7, which GW’s subtotal here in doc. III-A–2 would indicate is correct.

In John Mercer’s listing of items from James City County used by Mrs. Custis (see source note of this document), the entry reads “8 Dishes &c. 30/.”

In doc. III-A–1 this entry is numbered 121.
