I. Franklin’s Proposal, [20 August 1776]

I. Franklin’s Proposal

Moses1 standing on the Shore, and extending his Hand over the Sea, thereby causing the same to overwhelm Pharoah who is sitting in an open Chariot, a Crown on his Head and a Sword in his Hand. Rays from a Pillar of Fire in the Clouds, reaching to Moses, to express that he acts by Command of the Deity.

Motto, Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God.

MS (DLC); in Franklin’s hand.

For the motto, derived from “Bradshaw’s Epitaph,” see Appendix II in this volume on that “Epitaph,” which was no doubt Franklin’s own composition.

1“in the Dress of a High Priest” inserted and then deleted
