Mr Carstairs has politely favoured us with the perusal of a letter from you, requesting a copy of the Carpenter’s Prices, & mentioning your intention to forward to us an order for books for the College Library.—

The Book of Prices which we sent to him, is the latest that has been published in this city, but is, we understand, very incorrect.—

Supposing that it may be of assistance to You, in the formation of Your list, we forward You by this day’s mail, a copy of our Catalogue as far as printed. The whole will be finished by the 1st of January, & a complete copy will then be forwarded by

RC (MHi); in the hand of a representative of Mathew Carey & Son; at head of text: “Hon Thos Jefferson Esq.”; endorsed by TJ as a letter from “Carey Matthew” received 26 Dec. 1817 and so recorded in SJL.

The Philadelphia printing and bookselling firm of Mathew Carey & Son began operation in 1817 when Carey partnered with his son Henry Charles Carey. It lasted until the elder Carey retired in 1822 (ANB description begins John A. Garraty and Mark C. Carnes, eds., American National Biography, 1999, 24 vols. description ends ; [James Robinson], Robinson’s Original Annual Directory for 1817 [Philadelphia, (1817)], 103; Philadelphia Directory and Register, for 1822 [Philadelphia, 1822]).

Mathew Carey published and sent to Thomas Carstairs The House Carpenters’ Book of Prices, and Rules for measuring and valuing all their different kinds of work (Philadelphia, 1812; Poor, Jefferson’s Library description begins Nathaniel P. Poor, Catalogue. President Jefferson’s Library, 1829 description ends , 6 [no. 243]).
