David Bailie Warden to Thomas Jefferson, 1 August 1814

From David Bailie Warden

1. August, 1814.

I have forwarded a trunk, to the care of mr. Shaler, at gand, and addressed to Mr. Short, Philadelphia, containing volumes and brochures for yourself and this gentleman, from mr. Rochon

I saw General Kosciusko yesterday who bids me present you his respects, and to inform you, that he has transmitted a letter to you through Mr. Parker.—He was preparing to set out for his place near Fontainbleau—He forwarded the letter to Mr. nimsewitz—General La Fayette proposes to write to you.—

I have forwarded a letter and documents to you, by mr. Shaler, under cover to General Mason, concerning the suspension of my Consular functions.—I had proposed to visit Washington, but I have not been able to procure a passport from London, without which, Mr. Gallatin informs me, I cannot be received on board the John Adams—This circumstance, and the strong conviction that I have zealously and actively discharged the duties of my office, have determined me to wait at Paris for further orders—I trust that you will find my justification satisfactory, and that I have done no voluntary act to render me unworthy of your further protection: though indeed I feel ashamed to trouble you again on the same subject—

mr. La Harpe, the preceptor of the Emperor of Russia has spoken to mr. Gallatin in my behalf; so has Mr. Say—the Baron De Humboldt has written to the President in the warmest manner for my reestablishment—so have other distinguished personages—

I inclose a letter from mr. De Tracey—To whom I have presented a copy of the Commentary on montesquieu.—

D. B. Warden—

RC (DLC: TJ Papers, 201:35760–1); subjoined to 2d Dupl of Warden to TJ, 6 May 1814; addressed: “His Excellency, Thomas Jefferson Esquire Monticello”; franked; postmarked Washington, 9 Oct.; endorsed by TJ as received 12 Oct. 1814 and so recorded in SJL. Enclosure: Destutt de Tracy to TJ, 14 July 1814.

gand: Ghent.

Alexis Marie rochon wrote TJ a letter in support of Warden on 2 Aug. 1814, of which only the following extract has been found: “Il vient de perdre sa place et c’est pour moi, et pour notre ami, m. Le Ray de Chaumont un vrai sujet d’affliction: c’est un excellent homme et toutes les personnes de mes amis et de mes amis connoissances eprouvent un vrai regret de la perte qu’il a fait d’une place qu’il remplissoit avec zele et assiduité” (“He has just lost his post and it is for me and our friend M. Le Ray de Chaumont a very afflicting subject: he is an excellent man and all my friends and acquaintances truly regret his loss of a position that he filled with such zeal and assiduity”) (Tr in MdHi: Warden Letterbooks; entirely in Warden’s hand; partially dated “2 aout” [“2 Aug.”]; followed by a letter dated 4 Aug. 1814; in left margin: “Rochon to mr. Jefferson”; not recorded in SJL and probably never received by TJ).

Alexander von Humboldt wrote president James Madison on Warden’s behalf on 26 Aug. 1813 (Madison, Papers description begins William T. Hutchinson, Robert A. Rutland, John C. A. Stagg, and others, eds., The Papers of James Madison, 1962– , 32 vols.  Congress. Ser., 17 vols.  Pres. Ser., 6 vols. Retirement Ser., 1 vol.  Sec. of State Ser., 8 vols. description ends , Pres. Ser., 6:559–60).
