Peter F. Fritez to Thomas Jefferson, 1 September 1820

From Peter F. Fritez

Philada Sept. 1. 1820.

Respected Sir,

By the request of Dr Cooper, I have the honour to enclose to you, two halfsheets of the 2d American edition of Willich’s “Domestic Encyclopedia,” edited by him, and now nearly ready for publication by Mr. Ab. Small, of this city.

Peter F. Fritez.

RC (MHi); addressed: “Thos. Jefferson, Esqr Monticello, (Vir.)”; endorsed by TJ as received 6 Sept. 1820 and so recorded in SJL. Enclosure: Anthony F. M. Willich, The Domestic Encyclopedia: or A Dictionary of Facts and Useful Knowledge. chiefly applicable to Rural and Domestic Economy (2d American ed., Philadelphia, 1821; ed. Thomas Cooper), portion of vol. 3, not found, but including pp. 458–71 (see Cooper to TJ, 1 Sept. 1820, and note).

Peter F. Fritez (ca. 1787–1829), printer, worked in that capacity in Philadelphia from around 1810 until at least 1824. He served thereafter as a prison inspector, 1825–27, and as a deputy sheriff, notary public, and justice of the peace. Fritez was also a sergeant in the militia during the War of 1812, a longtime member of the Philadelphia Typographical Society, secretary of the local Democratic-Republican society, 1819–20, and a supporter of Andrew Jackson’s presidential candidacy in 1828. He died in Philadelphia (Philadelphia Press, 3 Nov. 1810; Census Directory For 1811 [Philadelphia, 1811], 116; Daniel Bowen, A History of Philadelphia [1839], 42; Philadelphia Franklin Gazette, 26 July, 3 Nov. 1819, 20 Mar. 1820; Robert Desilver, The Philadelphia Directory, for 1824 [Philadelphia, (1824)]; Thomas Wilson, ed., The Philadelphia Directory and Stranger’s Guide, for 1825 [Philadelphia, 1825], 54; The Eighth Annual Report of the Inspectors of The Philadelphia County Prison [1855], 53–4; Washington, Pa., Examiner, And Farmers’ and Mechanics’ Repository, 26 Jan. 1828; Philadelphia Directory and Stranger’s Guide, 1829 [1829], 67; Philadelphia Poulson’s American Daily Advertiser, 20 Oct. 1829).

halfsheets of paper, in printing, are cut and set up in the press so that all the pages of a single signature fit on one of them (OED description begins James A. H. Murray, J. A. Simpson, E. S. C. Weiner, and others, eds., The Oxford English Dictionary, 2d ed., 1989, 20 vols. description ends ).
