Sir Egerton Leigh (1762–1818), the son of a prominent South Carolina colonial official and Loyalist of the same name and grandnephew of Continental Congress president Henry Laurens, was educated at Westminster School in London, 1771–75, entered the British army at the age of fifteen, and saw service in and around New York City, 1780–81. He succeeded to the family baronetcy when his father died in the latter year. Leigh later married an English heiress and established households in London and Warwickshire. He also became an evangelical preacher in the 1790s, helped to found a Baptist church in 1803, and served as pastor for its first eight years. Leigh apparently arrived in New York City in October 1812, was judged to be an enemy alien, and obtained his parole at Lexington sometime the following year.
