From John Jay to Peter Augustus Jay, 25 January 1819

To Peter Augustus Jay

Bedford—25 Jany 1819

Dear Peter

I wrote to you the 12th. and have recd. your’s of the 15 Inst.—1 It gave me Pleasure to be informed of your attentions to Mr. Vaughan &c.— and also to learn that John was going on well—

William, with Augusta, Mrs. Banyer, and little Ann— set out this morning to make a Visit to our Friends at Rye. I fear they will find the Roads bad—the long Spell of moderate misty Weather, has doubtless taken much of the Frost out of the Ground—

Majr. Lyon died the Day before yesterday, and is to be interred to Day at North Castle— Mr. Grant preached a funeral Sermon at his House this Morning to a numerous audience—2 He retained his Senses, & appeared to have Faith and Hope.

We hear that Jacob Barker had some Expectation of being nominated as a candidate for the Place of Senator, by the late Meeting at Sinsing; and made a Speech to them on the Subject, but with little Effect. Pierre Van Cortlandt it said was nominated without a dissenting Voice. Various Circumstances seem to render it improbable, that the Democrats will unite in supporting the same candidate for Govr. at the next Election. What lately happened at the Election of a Speaker,3 will not promote Content & Concord between them—

William and Augusta purpose to go with the children to visit her mother and Sister at New York; as soon after their Return from Rye as Circumstances may permit— I understand that Mrs. Mc.Vickar intends to reside in the Country—at least for the ensuing year.

Maria was much pleased with your late Letter to her— she spoke of it to me, as “a very kind” one— Her complaints continue, and for some time past have varied very little either in Frequency or Degree— Nancy’s Health has improved— she can again read and write with Ease— My Love to Mary and the Children. I am, Dr Peter, Your affte. Father,

John Jay

Peter Augustus Jay Esqr

2Ebenezer Grant (1773–1821), founder of Bedford Academy, Presbyterian minister at Bedford, and director of Princeton Seminary (1818–21). Thomas Little, “Biographies of Pastors and Stated Supplies, of the Presbyterian Church of Shrewsbury, New Jersey, 1734–1914,” Journal of the Presbyterian Historical Society 8 (1915), 60–61.

3The election of Clintonian Obadiah German (1766–1842) to speaker of the state assembly. German was involved in the western canal project, and had opposed the War of 1812. It took five ballots for the Assembly to settle on German on 6 Jan. 1819. William Thompson (Anti-Clintonian), William A. Duer, Michael Ulshoeffer, and Federalist J. R. Van Rensselaer also ran.
