Herewith you will find an inventory of Military and Quarter Masters Stores in the Magazine at New London which has been furnished by the Superintendent, I find the Report made by me was the state of the Arms only, a Copy of which I omitted to keep.

RC (DLC); addressed: “Thomas Jefferson Esqr Monticello near Milton”; franked; postmarked Lynchburg, 28 May; endorsed by TJ as received 3 June 1812 and so recorded in SJL. Enclosure: “A Return of Military and Quarter Master Stores in the Arsnal in New London Va Under the Care of Thomas Holt May 1st 1809,” listing armament including one cannon, with an additional cannon at both Lynchburg and Fincastle; several hundred musket barrels and several thousand gun parts, such as triggers, plates, cocks, springs, pins, screws, and such accessories as ramrods, 118 new bayonets, 5 espontoons (pikes), and 2 working pistols; and a large store of ammunition, including several thousand cannon shot and over eight thousand pounds of loose musket ball, in addition to several thousand empty cartridges; indicating that a significant percentage of the supplies are damaged, including several hundred military boxes, 808 musket barrels, 370 pounds of matches, 491 bayonets, 83 swords, 35 muskets, 12 ordnance wheels, 5 drums, and 2 pairs of flasks; and accounting for horse chains, 1,251 pounds of bar iron, 2 kegs of paint, and a wide range of tools, such as copper measures, sieves, a square, a turning tool, a breech wrench, branding irons, drills, tongs, a set of scales and weights, a writing desk, wheelbarrows, a riveting hammer, a bevel, a hatchet, an ax, a buttress, and a fire shovel (MS in DLC; on ruled and columned paper; in the hand of J. Snoddy, acting on Holt’s behalf; with subjoined notation that a copy of the return had been sent to Callender Irvine, the superintendent of military stores, on 25 Jan. 1810, and another copy sent to an unidentified recipient on 1 Oct. 1810).
