In the early years of GW’s presidency he served in a number of military actions against the Indians on the Northwest frontier, and in 1791 he represented Berkeley County in the Virginia general assembly. William Hartshorne (1742-1816) was an Alexandria merchant and treasurer of the Potowmack Company from 1785 to 1800.

Wilson Cary Selden (c.1761–1835) served as a surgeon in the Revolution and after the war farmed and practiced medicine in Loudoun County, Virginia. In 1793 he was a member of the Virginia general assembly.
