James Madison to Thomas Jefferson, 15 June 1810

From James Madison

Washington June 15. 1810

Dear Sir

The inclosed letters were brought, together with the separate Packet now forwarded, by the John Adams. The official communications received by her, from F. & G.B. you will find in the Natl Intelligencr of this date. The Editor I perceive passes over the obnoxious refusal of G.B. to comply with the reasonable course of putting an end to the predatory Edicts of both Nations; and it is not improbable that a like sensibility to the atrocity of the F. Govt may divert the public attention from what would otherwise strike it with due force.1

RC (DLC: Madison Papers); endorsed by TJ as received 17 June 1810 and so recorded in SJL. Enclosures: (1) David Bailie Warden to TJ, 27 Oct. 1809, 19 Jan. 1810. (2) Lafayette to TJ, 18 Nov. 1809, 20 Feb., 24 Mar. 1810. (3) Pierre Samuel Du Pont de Nemours to TJ, 20 Jan. 1810. (4) William Short to TJ, 7 Feb. 1810, and enclosure.

The official communications to Secretary of State Robert Smith from William Pinkney and John Armstrong, the American ministers to Great Britain and France, respectively, contained discouraging news about continued disrespect for American neutral rights by both countries. They were printed with their enclosures in the Washington National Intelligencer, 15 June 1810. However, the comment by editor Samuel Harrison Smith focused exclusively on French outrages and commended Armstrong for his firmness with that nation.
